A home office is one of the harder rooms in the house to light well. You need enough light to read a contract at 9am, and enough calm to sit in the same chair at 9pm without a headache. Most Australian studies get one of two treatments: a single ceiling downlight, or a desk lamp fighting a dark room. Wall lights fill the gap in the middle.

Why a desk lamp on its own falls short
A desk lamp lights a small pool of paper. Everything past that pool stays dark, so your eyes keep readjusting between a bright page and a dim room. That constant adjustment is what makes long sessions feel tiring.
Ceiling downlights have the opposite problem. They wash the floor and the top of your head, leave the walls dark, and if one sits directly behind you it throws your own shadow across the desk. The three jobs lighting has to do in a study
Ambient
The general fill that stops the room feeling like a cave. In a study this is best done softly and indirectly, so a wall light with a diffused shade or an up-and-down beam does the job without adding another bright point in your eyeline.
Task
Focused light on the desk surface for reading, writing and paperwork. This is where a desk lamp or a directional wall light earns its keep.
Accent

Where to mount wall lights in a home office
Either side of the desk
A pair of sconces flanking the desk at around 1400 to 1500mm from the floor gives even light across the work surface with no shadow from your own body. Space them roughly the width of the desk apart. Above shelving or a bookcase
A wall light mounted 300 to 400mm above a shelf grazes the spines and objects below it. This is the cheapest way to make a study look considered rather than functional, and it doubles as evening ambient light when the desk lights are off.
Behind the monitor
A soft wall light on the wall your screen faces reduces the contrast between a bright monitor and a dark wall behind it. Your eyes stop working so hard. Keep it diffused and out of direct view.
Beside a reading chair
If the study doubles as a reading corner, a directional sconce beside the chair is more useful than another overhead fitting, and it frees up the side table. Our reading light guide applies here too.
Brightness and colour temperature
For a study, aim for these numbers as a starting point:
- Ambient wall lights: 300 to 500 lumens each is plenty. Two of these plus a desk lamp handles most rooms up to about 12 square metres.
- Task light at the desk: 500 to 800 lumens directed onto the work surface.
- Colour temperature: 3000K is the sweet spot. It is warm enough to feel like a room in your home rather than an office, but not so warm that paper looks yellow. Save 2700K for the bedroom and skip anything above 4000K unless you do detailed colour work. More in warm white vs cool white.
- Colour rendering: look for CRI 90 or above if you work with fabric, print or design samples.
Dimming matters more in a study than almost anywhere else, because the same room has to work for a 10am spreadsheet and a 7pm phone call. Check the fitting is dimmable and that your globe and dimmer switch are compatible before you buy. Our dimming guide covers the pairing.
Glare, screens and video calls
Two rules save most of the trouble.
First, never put a bare globe in your peripheral vision while you are facing the screen. If you can see the filament from your chair, you will feel it after an hour. Opal glass, alabaster, ceramic and fabric shades all solve this by spreading the light before it reaches you. The Orbis frosted glass disc sconce is a good example of the type: the light source disappears behind the diffuser, so you get a soft wash rather than a hotspot. Second, for video calls you want light in front of you, not behind. A wall light on the wall behind your monitor, bounced off a pale surface, is far more flattering than a ceiling downlight overhead, which casts shadows under your eyes. If your only window is behind you, a wall light in front becomes essential rather than optional.
Renting, or not wanting to call an electrician
Hardwired sconces need a licensed electrician in Australia, and if you are renting you also need the landlord's permission. Plug-in wall lights sidestep both. Rechargeable and battery models go a step further with no cord at all, though you trade some brightness and you do have to remember to charge them. For a study, where the light is on for hours at a stretch, a plug-in or hardwired fitting is usually the better call.

A setup that works in most studies
If you want a simple starting point, do this:
- Two diffused wall lights either side of the desk at 1400 to 1500mm high, on a dimmer, at 3000K.
- One directional light for the desk surface, either a lamp or an adjustable sconce.
- One accent light over shelving or artwork on the opposite wall.
That gives you three layers you can switch independently, which is the whole point. Bright and even when you are working, low and warm when you are not.
