Count the downlights in the average new Australian build and you'll get a number in the dozens. Builders fit them by default: cheap per point, no design decisions, done. The result is the most common lighting complaint we hear — "the house feels flat at night" — and it has a specific cause you can fix without pulling the ceiling apart.
What's actually wrong with a downlight-only room?
Light from one direction, straight down. Overhead light shadows eye sockets and flattens every texture in the room. It's the same reason fluorescent office lighting is nobody's favourite — direction, not brightness.
One level of light for every occasion. A grid on one switch gives you interrogation-bright or darkness. Evenings need a level in between, and downlights alone can't provide it even dimmed — dimmed overhead light is still overhead light.
Nothing to look at. A downlight's whole design goal is invisibility. A room where every light source is invisible has no warmth to its lighting at all — compare any restaurant you'd linger in.
So are downlights outdated?
No — and anyone telling you to rip them out is selling something. Downlights are the right tool for task light: kitchens, laundries, work areas, anywhere you need clean bright coverage. What's outdated is downlights as the only layer. Modern lighting practice runs two or three layers: overhead for function, wall height for atmosphere, and the wall layer is the one most Australian homes are missing.

How do you add the wall layer without a renovation?
Room by room, two fittings at a time — this is not a whole-house rewiring project. Start where you spend evenings: the living room (two fittings, 160–170 cm, on their own switch) and the bedroom (bedside pair, freeing the nightstands). Two rules make the layers work together: separate switches (wall lights are useless wired to the downlight circuit — the point is choosing one or the other), and matching colour temperature, 2700K warm white at wall height (the kelvin guide explains why).
