Living room wall lights are what stop a room feeling flat. Ceiling downlights alone flatten everything to the same brightness; a sconce on the wall adds a second layer at eye level, which is the difference between a lit room and a room with atmosphere.

Where do wall lights go in a living room?

Either side of a fireplace, flanking a large artwork, beside a sofa in place of a floor lamp, or spaced along a long feature wall. Mount around 150 to 165cm high so the fitting sits above seated eye line, and place them behind or beside seating rather than facing it so nobody looks into a light source. How many for a living room?

Two is the usual answer for a standard room, balanced on one wall or split either side of a focal point. Longer or open-plan rooms take three or four spaced evenly. Switch them separately from your downlights so you can run the soft layer on its own.
