Hallway & Entryway Wall Lights

Hallway wall lights and entryway sconces solve a problem downlights cannot: a corridor lit only from above reads as a tunnel with bright patches and dark gaps. Wall lights push light sideways at eye level, which makes a narrow space feel wider and a first impression feel considered.

How far apart should hallway wall lights be?

Roughly 2 to 2.5 metres apart along the wall, mounted around 150 to 170cm high, gives an even run without hot spots. In a short hall, a single fitting or a pair either side of a mirror is usually enough. The maths is in our spacing and quantity guide.

What about stairs and entry doors?

Stairwells need light on the treads rather than in your eyes, so downward-throwing or fully diffused fittings work best. Can wall lights replace the hallway ceiling light?

In most hallways, yes. Fittings at proper spacing give more even light than a single oyster fitting, and they look better doing it. Put them on a dimmer so the corridor can sit at 10 to 20 per cent overnight.
