An up and down wall light does exactly what the name says: it throws light from both the top and the bottom of the fitting instead of in one direction. You get two soft triangles of light on the wall, one reaching toward the ceiling and one spilling down toward the floor, with the fitting itself sitting quietly in the middle.
That one difference changes how a room reads. A downward-only sconce lights a pool. An up and down fitting lights the wall itself, and lit walls are what make a space feel taller and wider than it is.
If a room feels low, dark at the edges, or like a corridor you pass through rather than a space you are in, up and down lighting is usually the fix.
How does an up and down wall light work?
The fitting is open at both ends, or has a diffuser at the top and bottom, so light escapes in two directions. Most modern versions use an integrated LED rather than a globe, because the light source has to sit centrally and stay compact.
The beam angle decides the look. A narrow beam gives you two crisp, dramatic cones with a hard edge, which suits render, brick or stone where you want the texture to show. A wide beam gives two soft washes that blend into each other, which suits plaster walls where you want warmth rather than drama.

What height should an up and down wall light be?
Around 150 to 170 cm from the floor to the centre of the fitting for most indoor positions. That puts the split roughly at eye level, so the upward cone has room to open out before it reaches the ceiling and the downward one lands on the floor rather than your shins.
Mount it too low and the upward light hits the ceiling as a hard blob. Mount it too high and you lose the downward throw entirely. Our mounting height guide has the numbers for every room.
How many do I need?
In a hallway, one every 2 to 2.5 metres. On a feature wall, two or three spaced evenly rather than one in the middle, because the effect comes from the rhythm of repeated cones rather than any single fitting. On a stair wall, one per three or four treads, stepped up to follow the rake.
