What brass means on our fittings
On a Battii wall light, brass is a stable, warm-gold finish designed to keep its colour. It will not rust, and it will not drift to a darker patina the way raw metal does. That makes it easy to live with: a soft dry cloth is the whole care routine, and you never need metal polish. Polish would actually damage the finish. If you have seen old brass door handles mellow to brown over decades, that is unlacquered solid brass doing its thing. Ours is made to stay put.
Where brass works in the house
Brass earns its place in hallways, beside beds, and either side of a mirror. Against a dark or deep green wall it reads like jewellery. Against white it warms the whole room up. In a living room, a pair flanking artwork or a fireplace gives you soft light at eye level without the glare of a downlight.
The one place to think twice is a bathroom or an outdoor wall. A decorative brass-finish fitting belongs on a dry indoor wall unless it carries a suitable IP rating for damp or exposed areas. Get the size and height right
Scale is where most wall lights go wrong. A sconce should register on the wall without dominating it. Beside a bed, mount the centre of the fitting around 150 to 165 cm from the floor, or roughly at shoulder height when you are sitting up to read, so the light falls on the page and not in your eyes. Flanking a mirror, a matched pair at eye level throws even light across the face with no shadows under the chin. In a hallway, space sconces about 250 to 300 cm apart so the pools of light overlap gently rather than leaving dark gaps.
Match the light colour to the metal
Brass wants a warm globe. A warm white LED around 2700K to 3000K brings out the gold. Cool white makes a brass finish look grey and flat, so skip anything labelled daylight or 4000K and up. The Aurum runs warm white by design for exactly this reason.
Pairing brass with the rest of the room
Brass sits naturally next to natural stone and ceramic, which is why several of our pieces combine them.
