Does brass rust? No. Rust is iron oxide, and it only forms on metals that contain iron. Brass is a copper and zinc alloy with no iron, so rust is chemically impossible. What solid brass does instead is slowly tarnish, a surface darkening called patina. Whether your fitting changes at all comes down to the finish, and most modern brass wall lights, ours included, use a brass finish made to hold its colour.
What happens to brass over time?
Bare, solid brass reacts with air and fingertips and drifts from bright gold to a deeper amber, then to the mellow brown-gold you see on old door hardware. That is patina, and some people love it. A brass finish is the other route: a stable, colour-matched surface made to stay as bought, so it does not darken or shift over the years. Neither is better, they are different intentions. Does a brass finish corrode?
No rust, because there is no iron involved. A good brass finish also resists the tarnishing that bare brass goes through, holding its warm tone with nothing more than the occasional dust. In very humid or coastal air, keep decorative indoor fittings out of direct wet zones, and choose a fitting with a suitable IP rating if you want brass near a shower or outside.
How do you clean brass light fittings?
A soft dry cloth, occasionally barely damp with water, is the whole routine. One rule matters more than any other: never use Brasso or any abrasive metal polish on a brushed or coated brass finish. Polish strips and burnishes the surface into shiny smears, and that is not repairable at home. Metal polish is only for solid, unlacquered, mirror-polished brass, which is almost never what a modern light fitting is. Skip the internet remedies too. Lemon, vinegar and salt pastes are acid etches that will strip the finish and take its evenness with it.
Is brass a good finish for wall lights?
One of the best. It flatters warm light, and 2700K to 3000K on brass is where the warm luxury look actually comes from. It pairs naturally with stone and ceramic, which is why brass runs through so much of our brass range, from the alabaster-and-brass Alba to the brushed brass tube of The Aurum.
