How to dim wall lights: globes, switches and smart options

A wall light you can't dim is doing half its job. The whole point of lighting at wall height is range — bright enough to read by at eight, barely a glow at eleven. Dimming LEDs is easy to get right and easier to get wrong, and the failures (flicker, buzz, lights that jump from off to half-bright) all come from mismatched parts. Here's the map.

What are the three ways to dim a wall light?

1. A wall dimmer. The proper solution for hardwired lights. Your electrician swaps the standard switch for a dimmer module — a small job, often minutes per switch when they're already on site. One dimmer can control a pair of bedside lights or a run of hallway fittings together.

2. Smart globes. A dimmable smart bulb (E14, E27 and G9 versions all exist) dims from your phone or by voice, no wiring changes at all. The catch: the wall switch must stay on for the globe to stay reachable, which trips up guests and muscle memory.

3. Smart dimmer modules. The best of both — an electrician fits a smart dimmer behind or in place of the switch, so the wall switch, your phone, and schedules all work. Costs more up front, feels right every day after.

Why do LED lights flicker or buzz on dimmers?

Two mismatches cause nearly all of it:

Non-dimmable globes on a dimmer circuit. If the box doesn't say "dimmable," the globe's driver can't handle a chopped waveform. It flickers, buzzes, and fails early. No exceptions to this one.

Old-style dimmers with new LEDs. Dimmers built for halogen (leading-edge) expect far bigger loads than a 5W LED presents. The fix is a trailing-edge dimmer, designed for LEDs — that phrase is the single most useful thing to say to your electrician. If a dimmed light won't go below about 50% or jumps suddenly to off, this is almost always why.

Does dimming work with stone and ceramic fittings?

Beautifully — it's where dimming pays off most. Translucent materials change character as they dim: alabaster deepens from bright amber to a candle-like ember, ceramic and linen soften the same way. A dimmed Petalo at 20% is a different (better) light than at full. Every fitting in our range works with dimmable globes; just match globe and dimmer as above.

One honest caveat: dimming to 5% won't make cool white light feel warm — a dimmed 4000K globe is just dim office light. Start from 2700K (see the colour temperature guide), then dim.
