Where do they genuinely make sense?
Spots with no power point and no wiring access: a stairwell wall, inside a wardrobe, a rented garage, a hallway in an apartment where the strata won't approve electrical work.
Occasional-use lighting: a picture wall you light for guests, a guest room used one weekend a month. Low hours means the recharge cycle stays tolerable.

Where do they disappoint?

What should you check before buying one?
Run time at full brightness (not the standby figure in the headline), whether the battery is replaceable when it degrades, colour temperature (plenty ship at a harsh 6000K — look for 2700–3000K), and whether it has a motion-sensor mode, which is the single feature that makes battery lights practical by cutting run hours.
